Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings

Woman receiving a dental exam

Many oral health problems don’t present any obvious symptoms during their initial stages, leading many patients to not notice anything until the issue is quite advanced and difficult to treat. We can help patients avoid these unpleasant surprises with regular checkups. At these appointments, Dr. Collier and Dr. Smith can catch and treat any problems you might have early before they can become a major headache in the future. Also, these visits will give our hygienists a chance to remove harmful plaque and tartar from hard to reach areas in your mouth, protecting you from tooth decay.

Nightguards for Bruxism

Do you consistently wake up with a sore jaw or headache? If so, then you could be one of the millions of Americans dealing with bruxism, or unconscious teeth grinding during sleep. This can severely damage the teeth over time, but we can keep them nice and safe with something called a nightguard. A small oral appliance worn only to bed, it places a thin but strong barrier between the teeth to prevent them from coming together during the night.

Athletic Sportsguards

Did you know that nearly 40% of all dental injuries are sports-related? That’s a lot of broken and knocked out teeth! Fortunately, avoiding dental accidents on the field, mat, or court is relatively easy—all someone has to do is wear a sportsguard every time they play. Rather than trusting your smile to some bulky “one-size-fits-all” appliance from the store, we can design a sportsguard that is custom-made just for you. It will be shaped to fit your particular teeth to provide unfailing protection, plus it will allow for easy breathing and speaking, helping you forget you’re even wearing it.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Early detection and treatment are essential to successfully overcoming oral cancer, but in many cases, patients aren’t diagnosed until the disease is quite advanced because its early symptoms are easy to miss. Nothing gets past our team’s trained eyes, however. We’ll perform a thorough oral cancer screening at all of your checkups, and if we find any suspicious growths or sores in or around your mouth, we’ll help you get the appropriate follow-up care right away.

Fluoride Treatments

If you take a look around, you’ll probably find fluoride pretty fast. It’s in many of the foods we eat, and it’s often added to toothpaste as well as public water sources. That’s because regular exposure to this mineral has been shown to strengthen the teeth and prevent decay. To give you and your loved ones an extra weapon in the fight against cavities, we can give you a topical fluoride treatment at your routine appointments. It’s quick, painless, and one of the best ways to keep your teeth healthy between dental visits.

At-Home Hygiene Products

Did you know that 99% of your dental care actually happens at home with routine brushing and flossing? Needless to say, the oral healthcare products you and your family use every day are extremely important, but with the endless variety available on store shelves, which ones are the best for you? Our hygiene team can point you in the right direction at your next appointment, just be sure to ask! We can even provide a number of prescription strength products that aren’t available on store shelves.

Emergency Dentistry

If you or a loved one are ever in need of immediate dental care because of a broken, knocked out, or extremely painful tooth, don’t head to your local ER, just call Desert Vista Dental West instead. We’ll be able to see you much faster (we often schedule same-day appointments for emergency patients), and we have the training and equipment most emergency rooms don’t to effectively handle urgent dental problems. We’ll make sure you or your family member get out of pain as quickly as possible!

TMJ/TMD Therapy

Woman in pain holding her jaw

In addition to your teeth and gums, the TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is also a vital part of your oral health. This is the small set of hinges that connects your jaw to the rest of your skull and enables it to move in all directions. Like other joints in the body, it can sometimes develop strain, injury, or arthritis, which can lead to symptoms like pain and stiffness in the jaw, chronic headaches, and even soreness in the neck and shoulders.

Our team has specialty training to not only diagnose a wide variety of TMJ disorders (TMD) but treat them as well. After determining the root cause of a patient’s pain, we can either rebalance their bite with an equilibration (in which we reshape a few teeth to ensure that the rows of teeth come together properly), or we can prescribe them an occlusal splint. This is a therapeutic mouthpiece that slightly adjusts the jaw into a more relaxed and natural position. A patient only has to wear it to bed, and over time, the jaw will adapt to this new position, making any symptoms go away.

Sleep Apnea Therapy

Do you constantly feel tired throughout the day no matter how much you sleep at night? If so, then you may be suffering from sleep apnea, the second most common sleep disorder in the world. We can help you start getting the rest you need using a small, custom-made oral appliance that’s specially designed to stop the breathing cessations associated with sleep apnea. Our sleep appliances can even serve as a viable alternative for those already being treated with a CPAP machine.
